Midnite Oil is a multi-disciplinary design firm, founded in 1993 by a former advertising agency designers who graduated from the USA. It was initially established as a sister company to The Magic Wand, Thailand’s first service bureau to offer high resolution input and output services including film recording and color separations. Working side by side with The Magic Wand, Midnite Oil ascertained a distinct advantage over its competitors due to the founders’ strong expertise in prepress processes essential for graphic designers. At the tender age of two, the company received three retouching awards from Gallery of Excellence, a high end computer graphics competition, held in Orlando, Florida, USA. Although the 1st Prize and 3rd Prize in Photo Retouching/Manipulation category were rewarding, the “Best of Show” prize which was voted by the general audience from 1st Prize winners in ten categories, was a truly gratifying accomplishment.
Started as a graphic design firm offering only creations related to printed matter, current services cover all aspects of product branding. In addition to print media incorporating graphic design, packaging design and advertising, Midnite Oil offers shop and display layout concepts, website construction and interactive design works. Midnite Oil’s accounts portfolio includes many internationally recognized brand clients such as JVC, McDonald’s, Clairol’s, Schweppes, EMI, Cannon, Prudential, Amway and others. Major Thai brands include TOA (Paint) and Department of Fisheries’ OTOP products.
Midnite Oil is presently starting to gain significant acknowledgement from the international market place with recent new client contacts coming from a diverse range of countries including Macau and The Netherlands. Almanac of Asia-Pacific Design, Design 360, Annual of Asia Design, Special Packaging, and Color Management for Package Design are a few examples of international design publications that have contacted the firm seeking permission to print Midnite Oil design works.
Although a true passion for design and creativity are vital, Mongkolsri Janjarasskul, Design Director and co-founder of Midnite Oil, believes that an exceptional design work must also push sales volume and accurately portray the client’s branding objectives, which is, after all a primary function of commercial art.
